Second Chance Barbers
Community engagement
Members of the community are able to drop by and get a haircut from Taiohi who have a passion for barbering. The overarching gift of being able to provide this service is the connections being created between community and our Taiohi who have often struggled to feel accepted. By eliminating prejudice and fostering relationships, we believe the risk of offending decreases as the feeling of worthiness and value increase for Taiohi.
The vision
Funded by the Toi Foundation, Second Chance Barbers was created as a space where programme participants were able to experience the realities of a barbershop and learn basic training without the external pressures that come with an apprenticeship before they’re prepared. Our qualified training facilitator and staff are able to work with Taiohi to identify how each individual learns best, creating tailored plans to ensure a positive, successful experience.
The other vision was to have a koha-driven barbershop where people from all walks of life are welcome to be a part of the START Taranaki experience, creating more cohesion within the community.
